Structuring Your Day with Your New Puppy
Bringing home a new puppy is exciting but can feel overwhelming. Establishing a daily routine is key to helping your puppy thrive while maintaining balance in your own life. Here's how to divide your day into three essential categories: skills training, active together time, and free time in a safe space.
1. Skills Training
This is a focused, intentional time for teaching your puppy new behaviors or reinforcing existing skills.
- Session Length: Each session should last 1 to 5 minutes ~ short and sweet!
- Tools: Use a clicker or a reward marker (YES!) and food treats to motivate your puppy.
- Method: Following the principles of distributed learning, meaning frequent, brief training sessions with plenty of breaks in between.
- Frequency: How many sessions you do per day depends on your schedule and your puppy's energy level. Even a session a day can make a big difference.
2. Active Time Together
This is time spent with your puppy where you are actively shaping or managing their behavior. While not necessarily high-energy, it's important you are present and engaged. Examples include:
- Allowing your puppy to play with toys independently while you do chores, like washing dishes.
- Taking a leisurely adventure walk ("sniff 'n' stroll") around the back yard, safe property, or around the neighborhood.
- Having your puppy sit in your lap and enjoy gentle stroking while the family watches TV.
- Going for car rides or quiet walks.
3. Free Time in a Safe Space
This is your puppy's opportunity to relax, explore, and just "be a dog." It's also your chance to take a break when you can't actively supervise.
- Use a secure pen or crate where your puppy is safely contained.
- Provide enrichment, such as a food puzzle or chew toy, for entertainment.
- For young puppies, include a potty area within the pen to prevent accidents.
Final Tip
Consistency in structuring your puppy's day will help them develop good habits and feel secure in their environment. Balance skills training, active time together, and free time in a safe space to create a routine that works for both of you!
